Sunnyside Cottage

With its bright, yellow walls, vintage linens and friendly faces, Sunnyside Cottage in Santa Rosa feels a lot like a welcoming kitchen on a sunny morning. Inside, visitors are greeted not with toast and jam, but with a wide selection of gift items ranging from classic toys to jewelry to retro home decor. “I want people to feel happy while they shop here and for it to bring back good memories for them,” says Debbie McCormick, who fulfilled a dream when she opened the shop in 2004. KITCHEN KITSCH /

Vintage designs etch their way onto towels and tablecloths. The kitchen designs that rocked the 1940s and '50s are hot right now. That worries designer Liz Jozkow a little because she loves them and hopes their popularity won't be a mere trend."I don't want it to go away. The designs back then are much more interesting to me," she said. She finds contemporary stuff too tame.Jozkow collected scraps of period linens for years while she headed her own textile design firm in New York City. Three years ago, lamenting the demise of the domestic fashion industry, she closed shop and moved with her husband upstate to Kingston. There, she began a new line of vintage kitchen linens, Tariana."I had trunks and trunks of stuff," Jozkow said. "I've taken a little swatch with holes and dirt all over it and redesigned it."The bright florals she has reproduced are vibrant and primary; there are no muted tones, no sages, pewters, taupes or celadons, except as a background theme. They come in seven designs, Rose Check, Field Flowers, Rambling Rose, Fruit Check, Floral Plaid, Veggies and Bouquet, all of which are made of high-quality cotton. Each design includes two sizes of tablecloths, an apron, napkins, place mats, tea towels and cafe and kitchen curtains.Jozkow hopes they'll have staying power. "We've had great response," she said. "We have lots of orders, but soon we'll have to think of something else. It will evolve." Debbie McCormick, who has just opened Sunnyside Cottage, a vintage cookware and home decor store in Santa Rosa, disputes that idea, saying there's a difference between Tariana linens and other 1940s and '50s retro items. She said Jozkow's designs "are more classic and sweet." Although other items make fun of the era, she says, "what's real from that time will never go away."
